Vusa Ncwane is finally retiring after 43 years at Durban Country Club. His journey started in 1975 when he arrived at the Club to visit his cousin George and was offered employment in the A-Team (setting up of tables for functions). After noticing Vusa’s hard work and enthusiasm, Head Chef Gordon, recruited him to join his kitchen as a sculler then promoted him as the assistant to the Smorgasbord and soon he became the Smorgasbord Chef until this ended in 2001. Vusa has continued his career in the main kitchen of the Club producing all our traditional curries, roasts, casseroles and pasta’s for our Sportsman’s and Banqueting Department.
Vusa loved to play soccer and served as the captain of the Durban Country Club soccer team which competed with many hotels including the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg.
His fondest memories of the Club date back to when the Dining Room, Grill Room, Red Room and “Outside Veranda” was still upstairs. Downstairs we had the bar which served pie and chips to the Golfers, anything else had to be ordered upstairs. "I remember the days when we had a huge vegetable garden with everything we required and nothing was bought”.
Vusa said that he enjoyed the busy times and the extravagant functions, saying "We used to work split-shifts starting at 6.00 am until 15.00 pm and then had to be back for the dinner service from 17.00 pm to 22.00 pm”. This was possible as he lived in the compound on the property.
Vusa remembers the significance of our members and providing the various catering options for them was of utmost importance. “When a member requested something, I would make a plan to get it done”.
We wish Vusa all the best in his retirement and thank him for the 43 years that he has dedicated to this Club. He is a pastor to his congregation in the Methodist Umkomazi church, a father to our staff and loved by all.

The 1st round results:
The Premier 1 side captained by James Buzzard had an impressive win against Maritzburg Golf Club at home. The final result ending 11-1 and thus a comprehensive win to start the season. Impressive wins by club stalwarts Murray Gilson, Ian King & Grant Lister-James were very pleasing, each winning their games convincingly 7&6, handing an infamous Dog Licence to their opponents.
The Premier 2 side had a bye in the first round, captained by Philip Grant.
The A side captained by one of our previous Club Captains Laghlan Gourlay, unfortunately had heavy rain impact on the outcome of their match against Royal Durban Golf Club thus resulting in a draw finishing 2-2 after the morning foursomes. The singles matches weren’t completed due to heavy rain.
The B side, playing at Beachwood captained by Paul Brown, played a determined Ethekweni 1st team. The foursome results ended 3-1 in the morning and the Singles matches ended 4 ½ – 3 ½ in the afternoon. The final score 7 ½ -4 ½ ended in a solid win for the B Side! Impressive performances by Ryan Peak, Matthew Kruger & Marc Proctor made for a good start to the season.
The C side travelled to Kloof Country Club to play a tough match in the rain against the Kloof A side. The captain Shaun ‘Frankie’ Cullen had a tough away fixture with his team and experience his first ever gin bowl. Unfortunately the result did not end favourably for Dcc, with the final score being 3 ½ - 8 ½. Liam king played well winning his foursomes and singles matches respectively. Some tight matches could have gone either way, possibly changing the final result.
Allerton 1 played away and lost 3 - 9 in their match against Central Durban. Captain Paddy Goss and his team found the opposition hard to beat around their home course.
Allerton 2, led by stand in Captain Markus Fritz played away at Windsor park against Greater Durban also had a difficult match eventually going down 4 ½ - 7 ½. Regular Captain Tony ‘Turbo’ Turbiglio will definitely have some inspirational words for his team before their next league match to turn things around.
Prem 1 - Won 11-1
Prem 2 - Bye
A Side - Drew 2-2
B Side - Won 7 ½ - 4 ½
C Side - Lost 3 ½ - 8 ½
Allerton 1 - Lost 3 - 9
Allerton 2 - Lost 4 ½ - 7 ½
