Good day all golfers,
The rain has arrived straight after spring treatment which will speed up the recovery process of the course. This past winter has seen an extensive eradication of bush from the course,
which will recommence next winter. This is part of Dave Henry’s vision, one of Durban Country Clubs greatest assets. Dave, for the few that don’t know, is our resident EPA man. Over the past years Dave has contributed immense portions of his time to getting the golf course back to its natural balance by eradicating the foreign vegetation invasion and controlling the silver leaf, thereby releasing the beauty of the indigenous trees that have been locked away for far too many years. It is incredible to see how much bird life has returned in such a short period of time. Ten well photographed pelicans made a welcome return after a couple of year’s absence on the 11th dam.
The 6th of December is the date for the Aramex/Postnet American Scramble hosted at Beachwood. This is the fourth year of this extremely popular event. There are only 10 tee times left in the morning and once filled, will have over 200 players competing for some great prizes.
SPRING TREATMENT AT DURBAN COUNTRY CLUB:
The hollow tinning of the DCC greens went off without any hitches and with the rain that is predicted over the next few days the timing of this treatment has worked out for the best. We are hopeful that the putting surface will be fully recovered by early December if the weather plays along. We appreciate the members patience over this frustrating time especially since we had the greens running very well at the time of the treatment.
We would also like to add that the cutting back of encroaching bush will come to a halt until the maintenance team have had sufficient time to clean all remaining debris as well as the reseeding of the areas that have been cleared. The goal is to have the course in pristine condition in time for the SA Amateur starting 24th February. We are currently putting a plan together for repair and redesign of the bunkers at DCC. We have a number of bunkers that need urgent attention which will be attended to, but a complete redesign of all bunkers is being discussed, proposals and quotes from leading course designers are being considered at board level. Golf operations will be keeping members up to date on all discussions in this regard.
2017 GOLF DINNER:
Golf operations are pleased to announce that DCC will be holding the 2017 Golf Dinner on Saturday the 2nd of December. We have secured Tim Clark the 2010 Players Champion and 2-time SA Open Champion as guest speaker, Tim will be joined by Mike Kerr who is currently caddying on the PGA Tour for Anirban Lahiri, Mike has worked with some of the greatest players in the game like Adam Scott, Ernie Els and Lee Westwood. The talk will take the form of a Q&A hosted by Don Gammon.
This promises to be a fantastic evening, we will also be honouring our two DCC members, Clayton Mansfield and Matt Saulez who earned National colours in 2017 for Golf. There will be a short prize giving ceremony for our 2017 Club Champions as well before the speakers begin. Chef Xanthos has prepared a wonderful menu so we look forward to a superb event. Details for the evening are on the invite provided below,
HUGH INGGS AND JIM BENNINGFIELD TROPHIES:
Saturday the 11th saw the playing of both the Hugh Inggs and Jim Benningfield trophies, we would like to congratulate Sean Fenger and Chris Smit on their 3/2 victory over Carlyle Field and Ashwin Krishan. Both pairings played some superb golf throughout this year’s event and the final was no different. The Fenger /Smit combination proved a little too strong on the day with Smit making some crucial up and downs and par saves to go along with consistently solid golf played by Sean Fenger. Sean is the current Club Champion so is no stranger to the winner’s circle, but it was particularly pleasing to see Chris Smit receiving the trophy on Saturday night. Chris has been an incredibly supportive member of the club for many years now and is always first to congratulate our golfers on any success they might have. Well done Sean and Chris on a fantastic victory.
We also like to thank POSTNET, Aramex and Callaway for their very generous support of this prestigious event. It was also great to see Mr Hugh Inggs looking fit and healthy at the prize giving ceremony to hand over the trophy on the 10th playing of the event.
Our Club Captain Lance Whiteford was instrumental in reviving the Jim Benningfield trophy which for many years had been an interclub format, the Captain did a great job in securing sponsorship for
the event through Mr Neresh Maganlal and Servotech. The format for this year was in individual handicap match play. We had a wonderful response to the initiation of this event which has a magnificent trophy and we look forward to having this in the calendar for many years to come.
The final was contested between Alasdair Muir a two-time club champion and the very consistent Ian King currently off a 4 handicap. The match was incredibly tight all the way until the 18th hole, Alasdair 1UP playing the holed rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt to close out the match 2UP. Both players played consistently good golf en route to the final which was a fitting end to another excellent tournament. Congratulations to Alasdair on his win, he is a worthy champion and great to see him getting back to his best golf.
Once again a big thank you to Servotech for their support and helping to make this wonderful event possible.
