Captain's chat

Greetings Golfers,

Last Saturday, for the second week, almost 400 golfers played our two courses . This, in the current economic climate in South Africa is a great effort by all. Golf operations invited past members to play on Saturday. 50 ex members answered the call. The editor of golf digest magazine Stuart McLean also made a guest appearance. Stuart was extremely complimentary on the bush eradication program that golf operations have initiated.

Over the next couple of weeks work will intensify so that when the summer rains arrive we will be ready to over seed the barren patches. Restoring the barren areas to a lush green look. The feedback from past members and players in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Mid Amateur Open have been extremely positive with some interesting thoughts going forward.

The second round of the Jim Beningfield individual men’s handicap knock out match play has just been played with some big upsets recorded. The Hugh Ingg’s men’s better ball knock out is now in the semi final stage of the competition.

Golf operations are looking to launch an individual Stableford competition on the second Friday afternoon of every month. This is open to male and female golfers of all ages. The 1st event is starting next month (September). Entries can be phoned into the pro shop (do not need to book four balls). By my next communication I hope to have the name of the sponsor for this event.

Good Golfing,
Captain

Beachwood Golf Course

Golf operations would like to inform our members that the Beachwood golf course and club house will be closed on Mondays as of the 21st August 2017.

Extensive maintenance will be done on the course every Monday in preparation for the week ahead. We have also decided to apply a one tee start every day of the week except Wednesdays, Saturdays and Corporate days at Beachwood. The 1st tee will open at 07h30 in the winter months and 07h00 in summer. This decision has been taken to allow the Wallington’s maintenance team sufficient time to prepare the golf course more efficiently and at the same time limiting any delays for golfers while greens and fairways are being groomed. It is crucial that we allow the green’s staff at least a 1 hour start in the mornings to get ahead of the morning field. 11th tee start will be considered in exceptional circumstances.

We appreciate that this may inconvenience our valuable members and it may take some time to adjust to this routine. Please respect this decision as it is imperative we enforce this plan for Wallington’s to prepare the Beachwood course appropriately. We thank you for your patience and understanding and we assure all members that we are entirely committed to delivering a Beachwood golf course worthy of Durban Country Club standards.

KZN MID AM:

On Sunday, 6th August Durban Country Club hosted the 2017 KZN Mid-Amateur. A field of 60 golfers from around the country took on the 36 hole tournament. After round 1, Durban Country Club member, Murry Gilson had a 1 shot lead with a round of level par, 72. The afternoon conditions were tough and with the final 4 holes into the wind we knew we were in for a tight finish. At the end, Derek Scullard, from Mt Edgecombe, finished on top, 1 shot ahead of Murry Gilson. Well done to Murry Gilson and to the winner Derek Scullard.

Well done to all the Durban Country Club players that made the KZN team this year, captained by Lyle McNeil.
