Gary Player returned to what he deems “one of my favourite courses”, the Durban Country Club, which he played twice this past weekend.
Welcoming Mr Player on the 1st tee was Durban Country Club Chairman, Kamlesh Ranchhod, and Don Gammon. A small gallery of members watched in awe as the 84-year-old drove his ball 265m down the middle of the fairway off the Championship tees.
Shooting a remarkable round of 75, he comfortably broke his age by 9 shots. Gary commented: “It is always such a memorable experience coming to the Durban Country Club. There is no doubt it should be the home of Championship Golf in South Africa.”
No stranger to the Club, Mr Player, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest golfers ever, is among the illustrious list of past champions of the SA Open when it was played at Durban Country Club. Having won 167 professional golf tournaments worldwide, he is one of only five men to capture golf’s coveted career Grand Slam, winning nine major championships in the PGA Tour and nine Major Championships on the Senior Tour. Player is the only player in history to complete the career Grand Slam on both Tours.
